How to update your Browser

Why stay updated?

What happens when you run a web browser that isn’t updated? Well, the browser is left vulnerable to criminals. Imagine you have a boat with a hole in it, water will eventually get in and sink the boat.  It’s the same thing with keeping your browser up to date. If you do not update it, your computer will probably end up being hacked. Cyber criminals exploit security flaws in old versions so that they can access a range of your personal information: emails, photos, banking details, sensitive data. The hacker can then sell this information on the Dark net, use your details fraudulently, send spam emails from your email account, etc.

Here's a quick guide on how to update your browser for Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari:

Google Chrome

For chrome it is super easy, Google Chrome should just update itself, but if you wanted to check
manually, here is how you do it:
  • Open Chrome
  • Click at the top right hand side with the 3 dots
  • Hover over help and then click, about google chrome
  • Google Chrome should then just let you know if it’s up to date or not.

It is unlikely that you would have to update it manually because it automatically updates the latest version, unless you have selected the manual option in your preferences, in which case you have to do it yourself.

Firefox

Firefox is pretty much the same as chrome to check for updates, and like Chrome it should do these updates
automatically for you. But for those who want to double check, here’s how you do it;

  • Open up Firefox
  • Click on the top right hand side corner where there should be three lines
  • Click Firefox help
  • Then select About Firefox
  • Firefox should then just let you know if it’s up to date or not.

Safari

Safari is a little different from the other browsers, however to updated your safari manually, follow these steps;

  • Click on the Apple icon on the top right hand corner
  • Click on Software Update...
  • A pop up should appear to let you know if you can update or not.
